Allen '37 To Be Inducted Into Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame

Springfield, Mass. - January 8, 2017 - Legendary Springfield College baseball coach, Archie Allen '37, will be inducted into the Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame on February 1, 2017. Allen is one of seven individuals that will be inducted as part of the 2018 class, as he will be joined by local legends such as Chris Capuano, who won 77 games as a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), Dan Duquette, general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, and the late MLB Commissioner, Bart Giamatti. 

Allen coached baseball at Springfield College from 1948 to 1978, and under his leadership, the school reached the College World Series in 1951, 1955 and 1970. Allen managed the U.S. squad at the 1963 Pan American Games, taking home a silver medal, and managed the Dutch National Team to gold in the 1964 European Championship. Having impacted the game of baseball on a global scale, Allen was awarded the 1993 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award.  A Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and former president of the ABCA, he amassed a 454-257-7 (.637) overall record at Springfield. Under his guidance, Springfield earned New England College Division Champion status three times (1969, 1970, and 1971), and was crowned ECAC Champion in 1977. 

This past summer, Allen was inducted into the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Hall of Fame along with Jim Stone '60, and was a 1972 inductee into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions in football and baseball.

In addition to the seven individuals, the Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame will also induct the Holyoke High School 1985 State Championship Team, and will recognized 11-year-old Brady Kahle, who will receive the first "Bunny Talifiero Community Service Award" for meritorious service to the advancement of the spirit of the game in Western Massachusetts. 

The Hall of Fame will induct its fifth class during its annual banquet on Feb. 1 at La Quinta, 100 Congress St. The banquet is open to the public.
