Men’s Lacrosse Stifled By Late Goal From Bowdoin, Falling 10-9

Springfield, Mass. – March 25, 2014 – Despite three goals from junior midfielder Bryce Serriello (Cape Cod, Mass.), the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team fell to the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in a non-conference battle, 10-9 on Tuesday evening at Stagg Field.

The Pride, ranked 13th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll falls to 5-2 overall, while the Polar Bears improve to 6-2 on the year.

The Pride got out to an early 3-1 lead following a pair of goals from senior attackman Ryan Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.) and a tally from junior Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.).

After a pair of strikes from Bowdoin senior Conor O’Toole (San Marino, Calif) and an inside finish from defenseman Mac Caputi (Brunswick, Maine), the Polar Bears gained a 4-3 advantage with 4:22 remaining in the first half.

Just 1:30 later, senior Devin Abad (East Longmeadow, Mass.) knotted the game at four goals apiece with a well-spotted shot from the left alley, sending the contest into halftime.

After a goal from Tyler Williams (North Hampton, N.H.), the Pride capped a long possession with a bounce shot from Sheehan that found the bottom right-hand corner of the net, tying the game at five.

With just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Serriello dodged down the right alley and ripped a bounce shot past Bowdoin goalkeeper Connor Laughlin (McLean, Va.) to give the Pride a 6-5 advantage.

Back-to-back Bowdoin goals from Franklin Reis (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and freshman Brett Kujala (Maple Ridge, B.C.) gave the Polar Bears a 7-6 advantage with 12:01 remaining in the contest when Kujala caught a pass from Will Wise (Cohasset, Mass.) and snuck one past Springfield goalkeeper Connor Nash (Burnt Hills, N.Y.).

Nash finished the contest with eight saves.

Just three minutes later, Williams beat his defender and pulled up for a 15-yard bounce shot that found its way into the back of the net to give the Polar Bears an 8-6 edge midway through the fourth quarter.

In response, Serriello let a shot go from the right side that blew by Laughlin to pull the Pride back to within one goal. Just one minute later, Brendan Boss (West Springfield, Mass.) collected a feed from Matt Fleisher (Ramapo, N.J.) and found the back of then net to even the game at 8-8.

At the 5:21 mark, Bowdoin sophomore Sean Offner (Denver, Colo.) fired a bounce shot past Nash off of an assist from Reis to give the Polar Bears a 9-8 lead. Serriello then found the back of the net for his third tally of the contest to pull the Pride back even.

With a man-up advantage late in the game, Kujala received an assist from Wise on the crease once more and beat Nash to give the Polar Bears a 10-9 advantage with 2:20 remaining in the contest, sealing the victory.

The Pride will be back in action when it opens up New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with Wheaton College on Saturday, March 29. Game is set to be held at Springfield’s Stagg Field and will begin at 2:00 p.m.
