Springfield, Mass. - May 7, 2017 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team will hit the road to take on Amherst College in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Second Round on Wednesday, May 10 for 5 pm contest.
The Pride, which is making its 10th-straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, captured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday after besting Clark, 18-10. This season, Springfield has a 12-4 record and has won eight of its last 10 games.
Amherst, which was ranked 13th in the latest USILA National Coaches Poll, is making its third-straight appearance in the national postseason and currently owns a 12-4 record. The Mammoths earned an at-large bid following a 12-11 setback to Middlebury in the NESCAC Quarterfinals.
Earlier this season, despite a late fourth-quarter push, the Pride was defeated by Amherst College, 18-14, on Gooding Field on March 29. Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) led all players with seven points off four goals and three assists, while Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) added three goals of his own. Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) made 12 saves as the Pride was outshot in the game by a 61-47 margin. The Pride struggled to have possession in the contest, as Amherst went 27-for-35 from the face-off "X". Springfield owned a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter, but the hosts used an 11-3 run over the next 14-plus minutes to own a six-goal lead three minutes into the third quarter.
The winner of Wednesday's contest will move on to face the victor of Bates College (14-1) and Plattsburgh State College (12-5) on Saturday, May 13.
