Springfield, Mass. - August 9, 2017 - When the Springfield College men's soccer team begins its 2017 campaign, the Pride will be grouped among the nation's top Division III men's soccer programs, as it is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason National Rankings.
Springfield College will look to build momentum off of a historic 2016 season in which the Pride were 18-2-1 overall, won the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Soccer Championship, and earned an automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Springfield College's 18 wins in 2016 was a new program record, breaking the previous record of 17 wins set in 1989. Additionally, the maroon and white set the Division III program record for goals in a single season (69), fewest losses (2), and winning percentage (.881).
Additionally, the Pride received its first All-American student-athlete in Division III program history, as Luke Alvaro, who was also named the NEWMAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Year, broke his own Division III program record for goals in a single season with 18.
Springfield College will return nine of 11 starters from last year's squad, including seniors Cam Powell (Housatonic, Mass.), Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Harrison Davis (Merrick, N.Y.), who were all NEWMAC All-Conference selections a season ago. Powell, who was named the 2016 NEWMAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 10 goals and 21 points as a defender, while Murphy, who totaled 17 points, handed out 13 assists, which was a Springfield College men's soccer program record.
The Pride will kick off its 2017 campaign on Friday, September 1 at 4 p.m. when it travels to Newton, Mass. to take on Lasell College.
