Men's Soccer Strikes Late; Defeats Westfield State, 1-0

Westfield, Mass. - September 8, 2018 - Freshman Justin Breedlove (Ellicott City, Md.) found the back of the net in the 78th minute and helped lift the Springfield College men's soccer team to its third win of the year, a 1-0 result against Westfield State in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride is now 3-1 to begin the 2018 season, while the Owls fall to 1-2 overall. Springfield College held a 19-9 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, including a 13-4 margin in the first half. The Pride was also awarded three corner kicks to the Owls' one.

In net, senior goalkeeper Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) had four saves, while his counterpart, Tyler Diotalevi (Ludlow, Mass.) notched eight saves in the setback.

Springfield College had a great chance to score in the early stages of the contest when Adrian Avellaneda (Baltimore, Md.) struck one off the cross bar, before Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) collected the rebound and sent a shot high, stifling the scoring chance for the Pride. Later on in the first half, Freddy Clark (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Joseph Olaynack (Middletown, R.I.) each got shots off, but Diotalevi was able to make saves to preserve the scoreless tie entering half.

The Pride finally got on the board with 12:38 to play in the contest when the freshman collected a loose ball in front of the net off of a corner kick and buried his chance to give Springfield College a 1-0 lead late in the game. Keith Dixon (Amherst, Mass.) and Olaynack were credited with assists. This goal proved to be enough for the Pride to escape with a 1-0 win.

Up next, Springfield College will host its first game on Brock-Affleck Field, as the Pride takes on nationally-ranked Stevens at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 9.
