Springfield, Mass. - June 5, 2018 - After leading the Springfield College men's volleyball team to the NCAA Division III National Championship, Sergio Figueroa Velez was featured in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the June 4-11 issue of Sports Illustrated.
The San Juan, Puerto Rico native played a major role in the Pride winning its 11th national title in program history in late April. The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Year totaled a match-best 13 kills to go along with seven digs and two aces in the national title match against Stevens to help Springfield to its fifth NCAA Division III National Championship in the last seven seasons. Since finishing his collegiate volleyball career on Alden Street, Figueroa Velez is currently playing professionally in Puerto Rico for the Yauco Cafeteros.
Previously, Luis Vega appeared in the publication on May 28, 2014 after the men's volleyball team captured its third-straight NCAA Division III National Championship, while Mike Pelletier was featured in the May 21, 2012 issue after he led the men's volleyball squad to the inaugural NCAA Division III National Championship.
Former track standout Steve Headley was honored in the June 3, 2009 issue and was selected after winning the 100 meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, his second national title of the season after previously placing first the 55 meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Quarterback Chris Sharpe, was featured in SI's "Faces" in the January 22, 2007 issue for scoring seven rushing touchdowns in a win over St. John Fisher during the 2006 season.
