Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With 19-3 Win Over Western New England

Springfield, Mass. - February 23, 2019 - Behind an impressive offensive performance from Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.), the Springfield College women's lacrosse team powered past Western New England, 19-3, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field. Saturday's victory marked the 15th-consecutive season that the Pride has started the year in the win column, dating back to the 2004 season.

Springfield College, which is now 1-0 on the year, owned a 13-9 advantage in draw controls, while also picking up 28 ground balls to the Golden Bears' 13. Springfield College was stout defensively, as it limited Western New England's free-position chances to just 1-for-9, while the visitors were also 10-for-21 on clears.

Sarnacki posted eight points, including five goals and three assists, while Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) followed with five points on four goals and one helper. Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.) and Katie Martel (Granby, Conn.) also had four-point days, each notching three goals and one assist. Defensively, Abby Wylie (Ellington, Conn.) caused three turnovers and had two ground balls, while Taylor Kane (Woburn, Mass.) hauled in seven draw controls to lead the Pride.

In net, Springfield College's Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) had seven saves, while her counterpart, Kaitlyn Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) also recorded seven stops in the setback.

Sophomore Hannah Calabrese (Longmeadow, Mass.) got the first goal of the day just 1:35 into the contest when she took a top-down feed from Sarnacki and bounced a shot through Marchant's legs, before Western New England answered with a strike from Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.). From there, Springfield College would score the next 10 goals, which was sparked by Sarnacki's first of the season at the 25:47 mark, assisted by Martel. From there, Martel finished a feed from Campbell to make it 3-1, Pride, before Pichel and Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals with an advantage to make it 5-1, Springfield College, with 13:31 to play in the first half.

With 10:26 on the clock, Kane found the back of the net, before Allie Goddard (Acton, Mass.) found Sarnacki in front for an easy finish to make it 7-1 with 9:18 to play in the stanza. Pichel scored on a feed from Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) at the 7:42 mark, before Sarnacki scored her fourth of the first half, which was followed by a marker from Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.) to send the Pride into the break up 11-2.

Campbell, Sarnacki and Martel all scored in the first 9:00 of the second half to open a 14-2 lead, before Pichel tucked home a feed from Sarnacki at the 19:49 mark to make it 15-2. From there, Springfield College continued to roll, as it received two more goals from Campbell and one apiece from Martel and Pichel to seal the win for the Pride.
