Women's Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Win Over Smith

Northampton, Mass. - October 17, 2017 - Behind an early goal from senior forward Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's soccer team defeated Smith College, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride, which was No. 9 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Regional Rankings, is now 12-3 on the year and 5-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Pioneers are now 5-9 overall and 1-6 against conference opponents.

The Pride held a 24-8 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while Springfield College was awarded four corner kicks to the Pioneers' two. In net for the maroon and white, Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) registered four stops in the shut-out victory, while Smith's goalkeeper, Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass.), had seven saves in the setback.

Applying the pressure early with three shots in the first 6:11, Springfield College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Quiles buried a feed from Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) for her ninth of the season, tying for the team lead. Quiles goal at the 38:49 mark of the first half proved to be the eventual game winner, as the Pride's defense held tough enough to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

Midway through the first, Smith started to generate some momentum as Reilly Sullivan (Keene, N.H.) rattled off back-to-back shots for the hosts, but the Pride countered with a string of four shots in a span of 8:19.

The second half was Springfield College dominant, as it held an 11-4 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes of play, as the Pride was able to fend off the Pioneers' attack to prevail, 1-0.

Up next, the Pride will travel to No. 13 MIT on Saturday, October 21 for a NEWMAC battle with the Engineers.
