New Orleans, La. - May 24, 2017 - Springfield College senior Carly Markos (Wallkill, N.Y.) was recognized for her incredible performances this year as she was chosen as the 2017 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) New England Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
The Special Education major was previously named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Athlete of the Year after winning the hammer & shot put throws at the championship & breaking the NEWMAC meet record for hammer throw. Her hammer throw mark of 56.62m (185-9) ranked 1st regionally and 6th nationally this year, while her shot put mark of 12.74m (41-9¾) was good for 5th in the region.
She will go down as one of the best to ever compete for the Springfield College women's track and field programs, as she owns the school records in both the hammer throw and weight throw, both of which she established this year.
Markos becomes the first Springfield College women's track and field student-athlete to earn the USTFCCCA regional honor since Kelly Curtis was tabbed the New England Women's Field Athlete of the Year in 2011.
