Women's Volleyball Tops Westfield State and Lawrence in Opening Night of Springfield College Invitational

Springfield, Mass. - August 31, 2018 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins to start off the 2018 campaign, as the Pride defeated Westfield State and Lawrence in three sets to earn two wins in the opening night of the Springfield College Invitational, hosted in Blake Arena.

The Pride defeated Westfield State by set scores of 25-12, 25-13, 25-12, before upending Lawrence by set scores of 25-10, 25-17, 25-13.

Leading the Pride was middle hitters Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) and Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.), who combined for 33 kills on the evening, while senior outside hitter Jen Donnelly (Exeter, R.I.) finished with 15 in the two matches. Freshman setter Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) registered 58 assists on the night, while freshman libero Briana Tovar (Tucson, Ariz.) had 27 digs overall.

Springfield College will resume action on Saturday, September 1 when it takes on Skidmore at 10:30 a.m. and Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m. back in Blake Arena. 

Springfield 3, Westfield State 0 -- Game One

Springfield College cruised to a 3-0 season-opening victory over Westfield State in Blake Arena on Friday afternoon, as the Pride improved to 1-0 to begin the year. Leading the charge was a pair of seven-kill performances from Walsh and Gabrielle Bradley (Fairfax, Va.), while Donnelly notched six kills in the victory. As a team, the maroon and white hit .308 as it totaled 36 kills compared to the Owls' 13.

In her first collegiate match, Tovar registered a team-best eight digs, while Bradley and Hayley Kmetz (Ardsley, N.Y.) added five apiece. Additionally, Labadorf tallied 23 assists in the victory.

Springfield College jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set on a kill from Donnelly, before the senior produced an ace following a kill from Walsh to make it 10-6, Pride. After a kill from Bancroft to make it 14-10, Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.) sparked a five-point run for the Pride, as the freshman ended the run with a pair of aces to push the Pride's lead to 19-10. After back-to-back points for the Owls, Springfield College ended the set on a 6-0 run, as Donnelly added two more kills to seal the 25-12 victory.

Opening the second set, a kill from Walsh made it 10-4 Pride before the Owls pulled to within five on a service error from Tovar. A kill from Bancroft made it 16-8, Springfield College, before consecutive kills from Walsh and another from Kayley Cimino (Cumberland, Maine) gave the hosts a 21-12 lead. Cimino would end the second set with another kill, sealing the 25-13 win.

Back-to-back kills from Tanner and Bradley gave the Pride an early 13-7 lead in the second set, before the Pride extended its lead to 10 on another kill from Bradley, forcing a 19-9 advantage. Holding a 23-12 advantage, Kait Bonsignore (St. Louis, Mo.) produced consecutive kills to seal the three-set sweep. 

Springfield 3, Lawrence 0 -- Game Two

Walsh and Bancroft combined for 21 kills in the middle to lift the Pride to its second three-set sweep of the night, as Springfield College cruised past Lawrence by set scores of 25-10, 25-17, 25-13. Bancroft led the way as she had a career-best 12 kills on 21 swings, hitting at a .429 clip, while Walsh added nine on 15 swings, producing a hitting percentage of .533. Tovar was impressive defensively, as she totaled 19 digs, while Labadorf handed out 35 assists in the win.

After a kill from Lawrence made it 6-3, Pride, Springfield College went on a 7-0 run, which included a pair of kills from Kmetz to give the hosts a 13-3 lead, before back-to-back kills from Kmetz and Bancroft pushed the maroon and white's lead to 13, leading 19-6. After trading points to make it 21-8, Donnelly and Walsh produced consecutive kills before Walsh forced set point on a great set from Labadorf. The freshman would pick up a service ace to close out the first frame, 25-10.

Both sides were neck and neck to start the second set, but the Pride took a 10-5 lead on a kill from Donnelly, before a 6-0 in the middle of the frame gave Springfield College a 19-8 lead. From there, Bradley earned a kill to make it 22-14, before Bancroft produced consecutive kills to seal the 25-17 second-set victory.

Heading to the third set, Tanner and Donnelly gave the Pride a 14-8 lead before Bancroft and Bradley combined for a pair of kills to make it 20-10, Springfield College. After a kill from Bonsignore, Cimino closed out the match as she gave the Pride a 23-13 lead, before an attack error and bad set from Lawrence sealed the win for the Pride.
