Rhode Island College Edges Baseball, 13-12

Providence, R.I. - April 18, 2018 - The Springfield College baseball team lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday afternoon, as Rhode Island College used two runs in the bottom of the ninth to prevail, 13-12, over the Pride on Wednesday afternoon at Pontarelli Field.

With the loss, Springfield College dropped to 18-11-2 with the setback, while the Anchormen improved to 16-9 with the non-conference victory. Springfield College recorded a season-best 17 hits in the game, seven of which were doubles. 

Senior Joe Gamache (Lebanon, Conn.) got the nod and pitched 3.0 innings, striking out a pair. Zach Kerr (Niskayuna, N.Y.) came on and pitched a strong 1.2 frames of no-hit ball, while Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs while also striking out a pair. 

Offensively, Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with two RBI and one run scored, while Alex Denoyelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) registered three RBI, going 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

Springfield College began the game's scoring in the top of the second as Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) doubled to right, scoring Logan Barrett (Petersham, Mass.), before Denoyelle roped a double to left, plating Fraioli and Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.), to give the Pride an early 3-0 advantage. 

RIC would score seven runs across the next three innings to take a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth, before an RBI single from Nick Leduc (Belchertown, Mass.) that scored Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) cut the Pride's deficit to three, now trailing 7-4. The Anchormen would then push their lead back to six in the bottom of the fifth, before the Pride rallied for three more in the top of the sixth, including an RBI single from Mark Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) and a two-run double from Shade.

Junior Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) scored on an error in the top of the seventh, before Denoyelle drove in Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly to center field in the same frame to pull the Pride to within one. In the top of the eighth, Rivest drove in Shade on a sacrifice fly to left field, making it 10-10 heading into the late innings.

After going down 11-10 following the bottom of the eighth, a two-run double off the bat of Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) gave the Pride a 12-11 advantage, but the Anchormen would rally for two in the bottom of the ninth to walk off against the maroon and white.

Next, Springfield College will return home to take on WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Friday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. on Archie Allen Field.
