Elms Rallies Past Baseball, 8-7

Holyoke, Mass. - April 24, 2019 - The Springfield College baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Elms in non-conference play on Tuesday evening, as the Pride fell to the Blazers, 8-7, at Mackenzie Stadium. Playing at the home stadium for the Valley Blue Sox of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, the Pride fall to 17-15 with the loss, while Elms improves to 10-20 overall.

Sophomore Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) got the nod for the Pride and pitched 6.0 solid frames, allowing just two hits while striking out seven, before Duncan Satterlee (Albany, N.Y.) and John Daley (Huntington, Mass.) came on for the final 2.1 innings. At the plate, Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with three RBI, while Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) led the maroon and white with three hits in five at bats, while also swiping a bag.

Springfield College scored right away in the top of the first when Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) drew a lead-off walk and stole second, before eventually scoring on a ground out from Cooney to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. The Pride pushed its lead to four with three runs in the top of the second, which included an RBI double from Russo that scored Drabinski, and a two-run single from Cooney that plated Russo and Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.).

Drabinski hit his second home run of the season in the top of the fifth to make it 5-0, before Elms finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull within four. Responding in the next half inning, Fraioli poked a double, scoring Eduardo Martinez (Southwick, Mass.) and Drabinski to make it 7-1, but in the bottom half of the inning, the Blazers rallied for three runs to make it a 7-4 game heading to the final inning. 

After scratching three quick outs in the top of the ninth, Elms began to rally in the bottom of the ninth, and scored a pair of runs on back-to-back doubles, before Thomas Slane (Tolland, Conn.) delivered the final blow with a two-run triple that lifted the Blazers to victory.

Up next, Springfield College will continue non-conference play when it takes on Westfield State at Archie Allen Field on Wednesday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m.
