Springfield, Mass. - November 13, 2017 - The Springfield College football duo of Nick Giorgio (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jordan Wilcox (Saratoa Springs, N.Y.) were honored by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for their efforts in leading the Pride to the first-ever NEWMAC Football Championship on Saturday.
Wilcox earned NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season, while Giorgio garnered NEWMAC Defensive Player of Week accoaldes for the second time.
Giorgio put together a dominating effort as Springfield wrapped up an undefeated regular season with a 43-7 win over MIT. In claiming the NEWMAC Championship, the junior defensive end totaled a game-high 10 tackles, which featured 6.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He also added a pass breakup as he set the program's single season record for tackles-for-loss, upping his season to 24 on the year. He currently ranks second in Division III with 2.4 tackles for loss per game.
Wilcox put together an incredible performance in his regular-season finale as he churned up 221 yards on 18 carries, averaging 12.3 yards per carry. He found the end zone three times, scoring touchdowns from 62 yards, 44 yards, and 39 yards and was a key part of the Pride's 390 rushing yards which helped the team set a program record for most rushing yards in a season, upping its season total to 4,523 and besting the previous mark of 4,496 set in 2006. To date, Wilcox leads the nation in yards per rush (8.13), is for fourth in the nation in total rushing yards (1,675), and seventh in rushing touchdowns (19).
The Pride will play in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship on Saturday when it hosts Husson at 12 pm on Stagg Field.
