Springfield, Mass. - September 29, 2019 - The Springfield College field hockey team earned its first conference win of the year as it held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
The win snapped the Pride's two-game slide as it improved to 6-3, 1-1 in NEWMAC action. The setback for WPI was just its second of the year as it fell to 7-2, 1-1.
After 17 minutes of strong defensive play from both teams, first-year Kyra Ashe (Longmeadow, Mass.) broke through with the only goal of the first half at the 17:42 mark as she snagged a loose ball and drilled a shot from eight yards out.
In the 57th minute, Taylor Conley (Yarmouthport, Mass.) added her conference-leading 15th goal of the season when she picked a ball out of mid-air after it deflected off WPI the goalie Karen Mushrall and hammered it to the back of the net. The Engineers would make a late game surge when Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, Mass.) scored WPI's lone goal with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation.
Strong defensive work from the Pride allowed Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) to make eight stops in goal as WPI owned an 18-14 advantage in shots and a 11-5 edge in penalty corners. Mushrall made five saves in the loss for the Engineers.
The Pride return to action on Tuesday when it plays host to Mount Holyoke at 6 pm on Stagg Field.
