Castleton Edges Men's Soccer, 3-2

Castleton, Vt. - September 14, 2019 - The Springfield College men's soccer team could not overcome a two-goal second-half deficit as it was defeated by Castleton University, 3-2, on Saturday night in non-conference action at at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Castleton improved to 2-3 with the triumph, while the Pride dipped to 1-5-1 this season.  Springfield owned a 17-10 advantage in shots for the game and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

Springfield surrendered an early goal as Castleton's Jack Kingdon stung an unassisted strike just 9:03 into the contest to put the hosts on the scoreboard first.  The Pride responded just over seven minutes later on Ian Macala's (Vernon, Conn.) first goal of the season at the 16:36 mark, however the Spartans would go ahead for good in the 19th minute when Ben Stewart scored an unassisted goal.

The Spartans tacked on what would prove to be the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the second half when Colby Gay assisted on a Jacob Godfrey's marker.  Springfield pulled within one in the 61st minute when Jack Rosenberg (Simsbury, Conn.) finished off a Keith Dixon (Amherst, Mass.) feed.  Rosenberg nearly tied the game in the 80th minute, only to have his attempt ring off the post.

Qasim El-Ashkar (Salem, Mass.) made two saves in the first half for Springfield, while Chris Prizio (Trumbull, Conn.) played the final 45 minutes in net.

Springfield will now have a week to prepare for its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener as it hosts Coast Guard at 12 pm on Brock-Affleck Field next Saturday.
