Springfield, Mass. - September 28, 2019 - In a rematch of last season's New England Women and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship, the Springfield College men's soccer team fell to Babson College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
The loss drops the Pride's record to 2-7-1 and 1-1 in NEWMAC play. Babson improves to 5-3-1 on the year and picks up their first NEWMAC victory of the season. The Beavers held the advantage in shots 19-13 and corner kicks 8-0.
The game was held in a scoreless tie for much of the first half. Babson was able to attack the Springfield defense with eight shots in the first period, with five coming on goal. Qasim El-Ashkar (Salem, Mass.) kept the Beaver attack silent for much of the first period. With three minutes remaining, Springfield surrendered the first goal off a cross into the box that Mitchell Collins beat out the Pride defense, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
The Pride defense continued to make timely stops to keep the Beavers lead to only one goal. At the 70:00 mark, Samuel Smith would enter the ball past the Pride's defense and allow Noah Labelle to send it in for the 2-0 Babson lead. Springfield would look to chip away at the deficit with a strike from Anthony Longo (Watertown, Conn.), but the Babson defense would block the attempt and control the possession for the remainder of the match.
Springfield travels to Framingham State on Monday for a matchup with the Rams at 3:45 pm.
