Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Past Williams, 1-0

Springfield, Mass. - September 22, 2021 - The Springfield College men's soccer program earned a 1-0 non-conference win over Williams College on Wednesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.

The victory marks the first win over the Ephs in Division III program history, and the first since 1989. The Pride boost to 4-2 with the win, while the Ephs hold a 3-2-1 record on the season. Springfield outshot the visitors, 11-10, while earning eight corner kicks in the victory.

Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) was sensational in the cage for Springfield as the senior swiped away all seven shots the Ephs put on target, while defender Patrick Silva (Pittsfield, Mass.) put together a strong effort in the backfield throughout the match. Offensively, Maitoe Suppasuesanguan (Bangpongpang, Yannawa, Bangkok) registered his first goal of the season in the contest, which proved to be the game winner.

The Ephs attacked early in the contest with three shots on goal over the first six minutes of action. At 6:26, Knibbs collected his third consecutive save to keep the game at 0-0. At the 21:47 mark in the first half, Suppasuesanguan broke free on the left side and got a great chance at the first goal of the game, but Michael Davis turned it away. Both Springfield and Williams would register shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of the half, but the strong goalkeeping held the match in a scoreless tie heading into the break.

After a Chayne Bruneau (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot was blocked by the Williams defense in the 60th minute, the Pride would not get another shot off until 74:33 when Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) supplied a promising chance to take the lead on the left side only for it to clip the crossbar.  In the 75th-minute, the Ephs placed a free kick perfectly into the box to set up the offense, but Knibbs was there to snuff out the bid to preserve the 0-0 tie. In the final moments of regulation, after a corner from Finn Welch (Williamstown, Mass.) got batted around the box, Suppasuesanguan secured the rebound and dialed in the game-winner in the 88th-minute, allowing the Pride to win 1-0.

Springfield will return to conference play on Saturday, September 25 at MIT at 4 pm.
