Chicopee, Mass. - March 7, 2020 - For the second-straight night, the Springfield College men's volleyball team swept its opponent as it downed Elms College by the scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-12.
Springfield, which was the top-ranked team in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, improved to 18-2 on the season.
Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) was outstanding on the right side with 16 kills, which came at a .600 clip, as he also totaled four aces, while both Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) and Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) totaled 11 kills. Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) led Springfield to 43 kills and a .435 team hitting percentage after totaling 37 assists and chipping in seven digs, while Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) recorded a match-high 13 digs.
Brandow began the match with back-to-back aces to help the Pride surge out to a 5-1 advantage in the opening set. Elms would bounce back with a 10-5 burst to regain an 11-10 lead on an ace of their own, but Springfield would use a 5-1 burst highlighted by a stuff block from Lilley and ace by Braden Tam (Hong Kong) to earn some breathing room at 20-16. York, Anderson, and Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) combined for a block for set point, and Anderson sealed the 25-19 win with his fourth kill of the night.
There was no shortage of offense in the second set, as Springfield erupted for 22 kills at a .500 clip, while Elms notched 17 kills while hitting .447. In a set where there were 16 ties in the early going, Springfield benefitted from an ace by Anderson and kills from York and Brandow to open up a 19-16 edge. Anderson, who totaled eight kills in the frame, was too strong down the stretch as the Pride battled their way to a 25-23 win.
Springfield carried that momentum in the third, as it held the Blazers to a -.024 hitting percentage while totaling 11 kills at a .407 clip. The Pride raced out to a 13-6 lead and never looked back as Brandow's fourth kill of the night completed the Pride's fourth-straight three-set victory.
Next up for the Pride will be a match at Lasell on Wednesday at 6 pm.
