Kissimmee, Fla. - March 19, 2019 - The Springfield College softball team fell to Rowan, 8-0, but came back and defeated Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.), 7-6, to settle with a split at the Osceola County Softball Complex on Tuesday.
With the split, the Pride is now 4-2 on the year, while Rowan, which was ranked No. 8 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Preseason National Poll, improved to 7-5, while Mount Saint Mary falls to 0-8 overall.
Springfield College will now turn its attention to St. Norbert College and Bethel on Thursday, as the Pride will square off with St. Norbert's at 9:30 a.m. before taking on Bethel at 11:45 a.m.
Rowan 8, Springfield College 0 -- Game One
Springfield College was limited to just two hits as the Profs scored five runs in the first two innings and defeated the Pride, 8-0, to start off the day on Tuesday. Marisa Valenti (Trumbull, Conn.) took the loss as she pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four hits and five earned runs, while Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) came on to pitch the final 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs.
Rowan's starter, Jesse DeDomenico (East Windsor, N.J.) was effective as she pitched a complete-game two hitter, striking out 11 Springfield College batters en route to her third win of the year.
The Profs scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second inning to jump out to an early 5-0 lead over the Pride, before tacking on two more in the top of the fifth, and one in the sixth to finish off the victory.
Junior Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.) had one of the Pride's two hits, as Valenti also went 1-for-1 at the dish.
Springfield College 7, Mount Saint Mary 6 -- Game Two
Freshman pitcher Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) pitched a complete-game and had six strikeouts as the Pride rallied to defeat Mount Saint Mary, 7-6, to salvage a split on Tuesday. Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBI, while Allen and Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) had a pair of hits in the victory.
Springfield College struck first in the top of the first inning when Slane reached first on an error at second base, allowing Allen to come in from third, but the Knights came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead over the Pride after one frame.
Freshman Sara Mulligan (Cheshire, Conn.) pulled Springfield College even at two apiece with an RBI double to score Kane, but once again, Mount Saint Mary tallied four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead over the maroon and white after two innings.
Springfield College began chipping away at the four-run deficit in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single from Fernandez that scored Mulligan, before in the fifth, Kane singled to left to plate Christina D'Ambro (New Hartford, N.Y.), making it 6-4, Knights.
After Kane shut Mount Saint Mary down in the bottom of the fifth, Springfield College added three runs in the top of the sixth, including a two-run single from Conley, followed by an RBI from Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) to give the Pride a 7-6 lead.
Kane came out in the bottom of the seventh and defused the Knights' rally, sealing the one-run win for the Pride.
