Windham, Conn. - March 27, 2019 - The Springfield College softball team fell twice to Eastern Connecticut in a non-conference doubleheader at Clyde Washburne Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops the Pride to 6-6 overall, while the Warriors improve to 11-3 with the sweep.
Springfield College will now gear up for its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play when it hosts WPI on Potter Field on Friday, March 29, beginning at 3 p.m.
Eastern Connecticut 3, Springfield College 0 -- Game One
Senior pitcher Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up just four hits and two earned runs while striking out one in her second loss of the season, as the Pride only mustered up five hits in a 3-0 loss to Eastern Connecticut in the first of two games on Wednesday. Warriors' starter Morgan Bolduk (Vernon, Conn.) was effective in the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up just five hits while striking out three Pride batters.
Eastern Connecticut picked up its first run in the bottom of the third inning, and the Pride looked to respond in the top of the fourth when Christina D'Ambro (New Hartford, N.Y.) pinch ran following a single from Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.), before moving to third following a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Salvietti (Cheshire, Conn.) and ground out to first from Sara Mulligan (Cheshire, Conn.). With two outs, Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) grounded out to defuse the rally, keeping it 1-0 Warriors.
From there, Eastern Connecticut picked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Pride was unable to scratch a run across the plate as the Pride was shut out, 4-0, in game one.
Eastern Connecticut 8, Springfield College 4 -- Game Two
Allen and Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) each registered two hits apiece as the Pride fell to Eastern Connecticut, 8-4, in the second of two games with the Warriors on Wednesday.
Freshman Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) got the nod and pitched 4.0 innings, giving up just seven hits while striking out three. Junior Marisa Valenti (Trumbull, Conn.) pitched the final 2.0 innings, also striking out a pair.
Springfield College got on the board first on an RBI double off the bat of Slane, before taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a run-scoring single from Wheeler that scored Gabrielle Alfieri (Cornwall, N.Y.).
Eastern Connecticut pulled even in the bottom of the second to make it 2-2, but the Pride rebounded with a run in the top of the third on an RBI single from Allen. After another run for the Warriors in the bottom of the frame, Springfield College scored its fourth run when Jessie Storch (Granby, Conn.) was plated on a groundout from Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.).
Taking a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth, Eastern Connecticut posted five runs to take an 8-4 lead over the Pride, resulting in a four-run win for the Warriors.
