Norton, Mass. - April 3, 2021 - The Springfield College softball program swept Wheaton College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. In the first game, the Pride earned a 6-3 victory and sealed a 12-5 win to complete the sweep over the Lyons.
The Pride improved to 4-0 on the season while the Lyons sit at 2-2 on the year.
Springfield will host Babson on Saturday, April 10 for another NEWMAC doubleheader starting at 12pm.
Game 1 - Springfield 6, Wheaton 3
Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) was outstanding in the opener as she went 4-for-4 at the plate and also earned the win in the circle as she scattered five hits over four innings of play while striking out five. Kane came out dealing in the first inning striking out three straight Wheaton batters and allowing only one hit for the Pride, but the Lyons would strike in the bottom of the second when Sarah Pritchard delivered a solo homer.
Springfield would respond in the top of the third inning, as Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I.) would single to kick off the frame and later advance to third on an error, before Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) plated Doyle with an infield groundout. Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.), who reached on an error, would score off a sac fly from Kayla Stvan (Parlin, N.J.) to give the Pride the lead for good as Springfield opened up a 2-1 lead after three innings of play.
In the fourth, after Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) reached on an error, Kane drilled a single to center field that would bring Serricchio in and give the Pride a 3-1 cushion. The Lyons would trim the lead back to 3-2 after a run-scoring single by Pritchard, but Kane would strike again for the Pride in the sixth, as her double to center field would later result in Springfield's fourth run thanks to another single from Doyle. The Pride would expand their lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh with an RBI double from Serricchio and RBI single from Hannah Salvietti (Cheshire, Conn.). The Lyons would look to mount a rally, scoring one run in the seventh, but the Pride would close out the game on a double play to seal the 6-3 win.
Ashley Pugliese (Long Island, N.Y.) would pitch three innings of relief en route to earning the save and Doyle was strong at the plate with three hits for the Pride.
Game 2 - Springfield 12, Wheaton 5
In the second game of the afternoon, Springfield would build a 5-0 lead after a big second inning. The frame was highlighted by run-scoring singles by Salvietti, Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.), and Doyle, as well as a sacrific fly from Fernandez. In the third inning, the Pride would add a pair of runs off the bats of Salvetti and Lucy Puskas (Roxybury, Conn.), but the Lyons would edge into the Springfield lead with three runs of their own to make the score 7-3 going into the fourth inning.
The Lyons would trim the Pride's advantage to 7-5 after a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, but in the top of the sixth, Springfield would explode for five runs off six hits to separate themselves from Wheaton and earn a 12-5 victory. Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) kickstarted the burst with a two-run single to center.
The Pride would account for 16 hits in the second contest, including 15 singles. Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) picked up the win, striking out four in five innings of work. Doyle finished with four hits in the win and Kane would score three times for the visitors.
