Defense Shines as Women's Basketball Defeats Westfield State, 70-60

Westfield, Mass. - December 14, 2018 - Led by a combined 37 points from Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) and Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.), the Springfield College women's basketball team defeated Westfield State, 70-60, on Friday evening in the Woodward Center. The Pride held the Owls to a season-low 60 points in 40 minutes of play, including just 16 in the first half of play.

Winning for the fifth time in the last six games, Springfield College improves to 6-4 overall, while the Owls fall to 4-5 on the year. Springfield College shot 26-for-68 (38.2%) in the victory, while the Owls were just 20-of-72 (27.8%) in the setback.

Coming into Friday night's contest, the Westfield State women's basketball team ranked No. 1 in all of Division III and No. 2 across all NCAA Divisions in scoring offense, averaging 97.0 points per contest. The last time that Westfield State was held to 60 or fewer points in a regular season contest was on February 28, 2015, when the Owls fell to Bridgewater State, 60-57.

Goslin recorded a team-high 19 points, while Jacques followed with 18 of her own. Senior forward Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.) also finished with her first double double of the season, totaling 15 points and 13 rebounds on the night.

Springfield College jumped out to an early 6-0 start as Jacques caused a turnover and then finished a floater in the lane at the other end, forcing the Owls to take a timeout at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter. After the Owls crawled back to within on, Goslin drilled a three, before an 8-0 run in the late minutes the quarter, capped by a lay-up from Restituyo, giving the Pride a 17-8 lead with 1:15 remaining. Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) finished off the stanza with a lay-up to make it 19-10, Pride.

The Pride opened a 13-point lead to begin the second quarter on a jumper from Goslin, before Westfield State pulled back to within nine on back-to-back baskets with under seven minutes to play. Continuing to play strong defense, a jumper from Jacques with 2:46 remaining in the half sparked a 6-0 run that resulted in the Pride taking a 31-16 lead into the halftime break.

After Jacques opened the second half with a jumper to make it a 14-point lead for the Pride, Goslin drained a three to make it 36-19 with 8:09 left in the third quarter. Westfield State pulled to within 10 points with 5:30 on the clock, before the Owls made it a five-point game with 2:28 left in the stanza. From there, Restituyo drained a lay-up and Goslin hit a pair of free throws, before Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.) finished the quarter with a lay-up to make it 50-40 heading to the fourth.

Springfield College would go up by as much as 13, and hit their free throws down the stretch to close out the Owls, 70-60.

Springfield College will return to action on December 31 when the Pride plays host to Bates in the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
