Hartford, Conn. – November 15, 2019- The Springfield College women's basketball team pulled away from Montclair State University, 59-49, in the Trinity College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at Ray Oosting Gymnasium.
After the victory, Springfield remains undefeated through three games in the 2019 season. Montclair State evens out at 1-1. The Pride outrebounded the Red Hawks 42-32.
Springfield had a balanced attack with six players scoring at least six points. Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) led the Pride with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. First-year Rachel Vinton (Holden, Mass.) put together her best offensive showing of her career with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Amanda Carr (West Haven, Conn.) nearly had a double-double with eight points and nine boards.
In the first quarter, the Pride opened up with a nice turnaround bucket in the post from Carr. With 4:32 remaining in the period, Monclair St would jump out to a 9-5 lead after a jumper from McKinnion. At 3:25, Stephanie Lyons (Braintree, Mass.) would bring the Pride with in one with a 3-pointer off a feed from Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine). From there, Montclair would speed off to a 7-2 run to close the quarter, leading 16-10.
The bench provided an early spark in the second quarter for the Pride. At 7:02, Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.) would hit a transition jump shot to slim the Red Hawks lead to just 18-16. Montclair would keep the lead by a slim margin in the second quarter with three-point jumpers from Nicole Carter and Kelly Smith. At 1:38, Jacques would split defenders on the wing and finish at the rim to make the score 28-26. On the next possession, Goslin would break up a pass and finish in transition to tie the game at 28 a piece, going into the locker room.
To open up the third quarter, the Red Hawks would get a triple from Taylor Brown to go up 31-28. From there, the Pride would rip off a 15-4 run capped off by another mid-range jumper from Carr, elevating the Springfield lead to 43-37 at the end of the third period.
The Pride would continue to score into the fourth quarter. At 6:26, a Vinton layup would give Springfield a 49-39 lead. Montclair would cut it to as little as five after a pair of free throws from Kayla Bush, but a quick five-point spurt from Goslin would push the Springfield lead back up to 10 with 2:36 to go. Madeline Fay (Braintree, Mass.) would finish through contact and drain the free throw to give the Pride their biggest lead of the night at 59-46. The Red Hawks would score late, but the Springfield lead proved to be too much.
The Pride advance to the championship game of the Trinity Tip-Off Tournament where they will face Eastern Connecticut State tomorrow at 3 pm.
