Worcester, Mass. - December 10, 2019 - The Springfield College women's basketball team fell 55-48 on the road to Worcester State on Tuesday night at the Worcester State Wellness Center.
Springfield evens out at 5-5 while Worcester State improves to 6-3 through the non-conference.
Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) paced the Pride with 20 points, all in the second half, to go along with a pair of steals. Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) pitched in 13 points and 10 rebounds, marking her third double-double of the season. Springfield edged the Lancers on the glass, 46-42, but committed 22 turnovers in the contest.
The Lancers were led by Mya Mosley, who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Erin Gallella added 11 points for Worcester State, while Catherine Sweeney did a little of everything with six points, 14 rebounds, five assists, six steals, and three blocks in the victory.
Springfield opened up the first quarter with a 9-1 run, capped off by a lay in by Hourihan at the 6:20 mark. At 5:13, the Lancers would trim the Pride's lead to just 9-6 after Mosley would knock down a triple off the feed from Erin Gallella. The Pride would climb back up to a 13-6 lead after Goslin facilitated two great feeds to Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.) and Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) on back-to-back possessions. The Lancers would finish off the quarter on a 8-2 run to bring the game to 15-13.
In the second quarter, the Pride were limited to just two points offensively, while the Lancers grew their lead to 28-17 with 1:03 remaining, as Catherine Sweeney corralled an offensive rebound and layed it back in. Worcester State shot 42.4% from beyond the arc in the quarter.
The Pride used an 8-0 run to close the gap,with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter, Goslin made a driving lay up in traffic making the score 28-25. With 2:50 remaining, Gallella would knock down a wing three to give the Lancers a 38-29 lead, forcing a Springfield timeout. Goslin would knock down another jumper to cut the deficit to 38-31, with 2:16 remaining. The Pride would close the quarter out with another bucket from Hourihan making the score 39-33 in favor of the host, heading into the fourth quarter.
At 6:24 in the final period, Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) would force a steal and finish in transition to bring the Pride within two at 41-39. With just 1:30 remaining, a pair of free throws from Gallella would cap off an 11-3 run for the Lancers to push the score to 52-42. A pair of threes from Goslin in the final minute would keep the Pride to as close as six, but the Lancers would hold on for a 55-48 victory.
The Pride will host Westfield State on Friday, December 13 at 7 pm to close out the first semester.
