Babson Park, Mass. - March 30, 2019 - In a rematch of last season's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship contest, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team fell to host Babson, 14-10, at MacDowell Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Pride is now 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC, while Babson improves to 6-3 overall with a 2-0 mark against league foes. It was a tight game, as the Beavers held a 31-30 shot advantage over the maroon and white, while both teams secured 12 draw controls over 60 minutes of play. Babson won the ground ball battle, 23-15. In net for the Pride, Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) made eight saves, while her counterpart, Cricket Fligor (Weston, Mass.) made 10 stops in the win.
Leading the Pride was sophomore attack Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.), who had five points on two goals and three assists, while Katie Martel (Granby, Conn.) added four goals for the maroon and white. Defensively, Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) and Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) had three draw controls apiece, while Abby Wylie (Ellington, Conn.) and Sarnacki each had three ground balls.
Babson would score the first six goals of the game, before Pichel ended the run with a free-position goal at the 6:55 mark that cut the Pride's deficit down to five. After another Babson goal, Sarnacki scored her first of the game with 1:35 to play in the first half, making it 7-2, Babson, at the halftime break.
Babson would strike twice in the opening moments of the second half to take a 9-3 advantage, before the Pride went on a run of four-consecutive goals, including three goals from Martel and one from Gabby Fogg (Wells, Maine), to make it 9-7, Beavers. From there, Babson would push its lead back to four, before the maroon and white answered with goals from Nusbaum and Martel, but the Pride's late push was not enough as Babson held on for the 14-10 victory.
Springfield College will now return to Stagg Field for the first time since February 28 and will take on Westfield State in non-conference action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3.
