Springfield, Mass. - February 15, 2020 - The Springfield College wrestling team raced out to a 16-0 lead and earned a 27-12 victory over WPI on Saturday night under a spotlight in Blake Arena.
Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) got the Pride off to a fantastic start as he pinned Christian Chadwick in just 1:45 to start off the evening at 125 pounds before his twin brother Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) grinded out a 15-5 major decision at 133 pounds against Chris Cook. Springfield's Michael Vietri (Dumont, N.J.) had a great first period at 141 en route to a 16-9 victory over Carter Lewis and Joseph Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.) rallied late in the third for an 11-10 victory at 149 versus Ronan Ball.
WPI finally got on the board at 157 thanks to a 7-2 decision by Chase Lind and Tyler Marsh, the top-ranked wrestler in the region at 165 pounds, prevailed 7-6 thanks to riding time. The visitors continued their comeback as Brendan Marion earned an 8-5 decision at 174 and Adam Marsh held on for a 4-1 win at 184 to make it a 16-12 contest.
However, Sam Ware (Oakham, Mass.) turned Tyler Riggs late in the first period for a pinfall in 2:11 to clinch the match at 197 for the Pride, and Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) followed with an 18-2 technical fall at 285 to conclude the evening's bouts.
Next Saturday, Springfield will have a number of student-athletes compete in the NEWA Futures at Western New England.
