Women's Soccer Edges Clark, 1-0

Springfield, Mass.—October 8,2019—The Springfield College women's soccer team grinded out a 1-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

Winner of its last four games, the Pride now boast a 8-2-1 overall record and are 3-1 in NEWMAC play. The Cougars drop to 5-5-1 and sit at 0-3-1 in the conference. Springfield outshot the Clark 13-12 while each team had four corner kicks.

The Cougars owned the possession right from the start of the game and pressed the Pride's defense. Bridget O'Connor (Hanover, Mass.) came away with one of her six saves in the first minute of play. The Pride would get two early chances to take the lead as Renee Melisse (Marston Mills, Mass.) took the ball outside for the shot, but it was swiped away by Morgan Small, then at 6:50, Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) would rocket a shot just left of the net.

At 44:35, Clark's Katie Barber would connect on a shot that would send O'Connor diving to make an incredible save preserving the scoreless tie.

As the first period of play wrapped up, neither team held an advantage. The physical play continued into the second half, with neither team surrendering scoring chances.

At 60:35, Heather Jennato (Hookset, N.H.) would lift a corner kick into the box that Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.) would head towards the goal. The Swetland header was deflected to Sydney Wine (New Braintree, Mass.), who rifled in a shot for the 1-0 Springfield lead.

At 74:27, the Pride would look to double the lead on a Melisse sliding goal, but it would get called back.

With just 4:12 remaining, the Cougars would set their offense on a free kick from 25 yards out. On the kick, the Springfield defense would be whistled for a foul in the box, therefore, giving Clark a chance to even the score. Jamie Joseph would rip an indirect free kick towards the goal and be denied by Kinsey Colby (Easton, Mass.) and the rest of the Springfield front, sealing the victory.

The Pride look to extend their winning streak on Saturday as they travel to Wellesley for a 2 pm matchup.
