Northampton, Mass.- October 22, 2019 – The Springfield College women's soccer program came through with a 3-1 victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon at Smith College.
The Pride now own an impressive 11-3-1 record on the season and are 6-1 in the NEWMAC, which puts them second in the NEWMAC standings. Smith College falls to 6-9-1 and holds a 2-6 NEWMAC record. The Pride were able to rattle off 18 shots on goal compared to Smith's seven on frame.
At 21:53, the Pride were the first to get on the scoreboard with an unassisted strike from Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.), who leads the women's soccer program with 13 goals on the season. The Pride would look to add to their first half lead, but Naomi Falkenberg would make a pair of saves for the Pioneers before the half came to a close.
Springfield's offensive attack did not rest in the early moments of the half, putting a flurry of shots on goal. At 61:18, Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.) called her own number and scored off a restart for the Pride, making it a 2-0 advantage for Springfield. Then, at 67:23, Dale would be awarded a penalty kick that she rocketed in for the 3-0 Pride lead.
At 70:17, the Pioneers would receive some offense from Katie Slaenius to slice into the Pride's lead. The Pioneers would look to make a comeback attempt, but Bridget O'Connor (Hanover, Mass.) would swat away a pair of shots, allowing Springfield to cruise to a 3-1 win.
In a battle of the two top teams in the NEWMAC, the Pride will clash with MIT on Saturday, October 26 at 1 pm.
