Women's Soccer Withstands Cabrini, 1-0; Advances to Second Round of ECAC Tournament

Springfield, Mass. - November 16, 2019 - The Springfield College women's soccer program controlled a 1-0 shut out victory over Cabrini University in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

The victory advances Springfield to the second round of the ECAC Championship Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. The Cavaliers close out their season with a 15-4-2 record. The Pride outshot the Atlantic East Conference champions, 18-13.

To start the first half, the visiting Cabrini did not waste any time putting a shot on goal. In the first few seconds, Katelyn Gilinger found Diane Vansickle in stride and Vansickle punched it just over the post. For the exception of that try, the Pride took full control of possession for most of the half with strong execution. At 40:53, Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) dribbled up the middle and dished to Mackenzie Luiz (Newington, Conn.) on the right side, who flicked it past the keeper for the first lead of the game.

The Cavaliers looked to even the game at one a piece with a flurry of shots spanning from 26:30 to 27:35, but Caitlyn Normoyle (Springfield, Mass.) swiped away ever attempt in the span. Normoyle finished with five saves on the day. The Pride would try and add to their score just before half with another shot from Dale and a great chance from Adalia Malick (Bristol, Conn.), but Ashley Tutzauer would make back-to-back saves for Cabrini, leaving the Pride lead to just 1-0 at the half.

In the second period, Springfield's defense kept the Cavaliers at bay as Cabrini earned several scoring chances, but no points to show for it. Springfield looked to add to their 1-0 lead as the period progressed, but could not find the back of the net. At 79:32, Dale would escape a pair of defenders and rocket a shot just over the crossbar, with the score remaining at 1-0. At 84:38, Cabrini got a strong chance at the tie as the ball bounced right to Maddy Wojton in the left side of the box and she aimed a shot, but Normoyle made a diving stop to preserve the shut out victory for the Pride.

Springfield will play on Brock-Affleck Field again as they host FDU-Florham tomorrow at 12 pm in the second round of the ECAC Championship Tournament.
