Women's Soccer Collects 7-1 Win over UMass-Dartmouth

North Dartmouth, Mass. - September 8, 2021 - The Springfield College women's soccer team grabbed their first win of the season on Wednesday evening with a 7-1 victory over UMass-Dartmouth at Cressy Field. 

Springfield now holds a 1-1 record, while the Corsairs suffer their first loss of the season. The last time the Pride scored seven goals in a contest was on October 12, 2019 at Wellesley. 

Kellie Smith (Marshfield, Mass.) notched three goals in the win, setting a new-career high for the Health Science major. Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) tallied five points (1G, 3A), while Nicole Sweeney (Grafton, Mass.) added a goal and one helper for the Pride. As a team, the Pride put 17 shots on target and assisted on six of their seven goals. 

The Corsairs received a score from Sarah Vieira, while in net, Jessica Costa registered 10 saves in the setback.

At 3:04, Maddy Bonavita (Wilbraham, Mass.) played a touch to Dale for the first score of the game, giving Springfield an early 1-0 lead. The Pride extended their lead to 4-0 as Smith scored her hat trick over an 11-minute span in the first half. At 17:52, Dale put a cross perfectly in front of a sprinting Smith for their third straight connection, which capped off Smith's scoring spurt and gave Springfield a 4-0 lead. 

In the second half, the Pride put eight shots on goal, resulting in three more goals. At 57:01, Sweeney dished to Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) for the goal, which gave the sophomore her first career goal and pushed the lead to 7-0 for Springfield. At 80:43, Vieria chipped in a strike for the Corsairs, but the Pride were able to cruise to a 7-1 victory. 

Springfield returns to action this weekend as the Pride face Western New England on Sunday, September 12.
