Women's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Loss to Western New England
Springfield, Mass. - September 12, 2021 - The Springfield College women's soccer team lost to crosstown rival Western New England, 2-1, at Suprenant Field on Sunday afternoon.
Springfield now holds a record of 1-2, while the Golden Bears boast a 3-2 record.
Springfield outshot the Golden Bears 13-7 in the setback. In net, Caitlin Normoyle (Springfield, Mass.) registered five saves for the Pride in the contest.
Western New England received two goals from Allison Bruehwiler in the victory.
In the first half, each team looked for an advantage early, but strong play goalkeeping kept the game in a scoreless tie. Maddy Bonavita (Wilbraham, Mass.) put a shot on frame at 21:10 in the first half, but was swiped away by McLaughlin. Normoyle faced five shots on net in the first half and rejected them all for the Pride.
At 51:46, Bruehwiler notched a goal to lift the Golden Bears to a 1-0 lead. Springfield responded in the 60th-minute as Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) dribbled into open space and drilled a a shot from just outside the box to even the score at 1-1. At 63:38, Bruehwiler registered the Golden Bears' second goal of the game with a shot from the left side, which gave Western New England a 2-1 lead. From there, the Pride would continue to get promising opportunities, but could not convert. The Pride took nine shots in the second half.
Springfield returns to action Tuesday at 7pm as the Pride hosts Wesleyan (Conn.).
