Women's Soccer Bounces Back With NEWMAC Victory At Mount Holyoke

South Hadley, Mass. - September 18, 2021 - The Springfield College women's soccer team began New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon and earned a 9-1 victory over Mount Holyoke.

The Pride evened its record to 2-2 with the victory and tied a Division III program record for goals in a game, which was last met on September 12, 2019 in a 9-0 win over UMass Dartmouth. The Lyons slipped to 1-3 with the loss.

In the contest, Springfield took 46 shots and nine corner kicks.  A trio of goalkeepers saw action in the win, as Amelia Harper (Taylorsville, Utah) earned the win in 45 minutes of action, while both Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) and Bridget O'Connor (Hanover, Mass.) each saw time in the second half. Heather Jennato (Hookset, N.H.) tallied three assists in the victory and Cassidy Bailey (Monson, Mass.) found the back of the net twice.

The Pride netted the game's first goal just 4:15 into the contest when Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) ripped a shot on net from the top of the box, which was blocked, but the senior picked up the loose ball and connected with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the net.  With 8:46 to play in the half, the Pride scored the eventual game-winner when Kellie Smith (Marshfield, Mass.) rang a shot off the cross bar that Maddie Bailey (Pembroke, N.H.) headed in to make it a 2-0 contest.

Springfield added a pair of goals early on in the second half to push its lead to five as Cassidy Bailey added her second of the game on another corner from Jennato just 4:09 into the frame, before Jennato set up Alyana Sosa (Naugatuck, Conn.) for her first goal of the season just 1:59 later.

The hosts got on the board in the 52nd minute on an unassisted goal by Fiona Kennedy to make it 5-1, but the Pride put the game out of reach with four goals in a 11-plus minute span to make it a 9-1 game.  Reina Araujo (Virginia Beach, Va.) followed up her own rebound with a goal at 64:25 before Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) blistered a shot off the cross bar that found its way over the goal line just over a minute later.   Adalia Malick (Bristol, Conn.) and Marissa Martino (Melville, N.Y.) tacked on goals in the 69th and 77nd minute to complete the scoring.

Springfield will play again on Sunday when it travels to Williams for a 1:00 pm tilt.
