Women's Soccer Takes 3-1 Decision Over Smith
Northampton, Mass. - October 6, 2021 - The Springfield College women's soccer program picked up 3-1 victory on the road over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday afternoon.
Springfield remains undefeated in the NEWMAC standings with a 4-0 record and a 6-3 record overall, meanwhile, Smith now sits at 4-3-3 and 1-1-2 in conference.
Naomi Falkenberg notched 10 saves in the set back for Smith.
Springfield got on the board, at 22:39, as Kellie Smith (Marshfield, Mass.) corralled a pass in the box and knocked in the goal on the right side to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. In the 38th-minute, Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) would take a touch to the left side and cross into a cutting Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) to advance the Pride's advantage to 2-0 with 7:37 remaining in the half. Springfield would send a flurry of shots on frame in the final minutes of the half with the intentions of pushing the lead to 3-0, however Falkenberg would redirect the attempts to keep the score at 2-0 heading into the half.
Early in the second half, Springfield would continue to control the ball as Heather Jennato (Hookset, N.H.) brought a ball down into the right corner and laid a cross into a cutting Nicole Sweeney (Grafton, Mass.) for the goal, which gave the Pride a 3-0 advantage in the early moments of the 50th-minute. The Pioneers cut into the deficit, in the 87th-minute, with a goal from Ellis Parker off the feed from Kelsey Cahill, making the score 3-1 in favor of Springfield. In the final minute of the game, Smith would look for another scoring opportunity, but hit the cross bar. Although Zufan Bazzano collected the ricochet and put up another goal attempt, Ryan would close out the game with a save.
Springfield travels to No.5 MIT on Saturday, October 8 for a 1:30 pm match with the Engineers.
