No. 5 MIT Defeats Women's Soccer
Boston, Mass. - October 9, 2021 - The Springfield College women's soccer program fell on the road to MIT, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield was handed their first conference loss of the season and sits 6-4 overall. MIT, who was ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Women's Soccer Top 25 Poll, is now 13-0-1 on the season.
Amelia Harper (Taylorsville, Utah) collected seven saves in the loss for the Pride.
At the 12-minute mark, Karenna Groff snuck in a goal to give the hosts a 1-0 edge. Later, in the 40th-minute, MIT was awarded a corner kick and looked to advance the score to 2-0, however, Harper leaped into the mix and snatched away the attempt to keep the score at 1-0.
In the 56th-minute, Maya Nielan rose up and headed in a corner feed off the foot of Natalie Barnouw to add to the MIT total, before, the Engineers would advance their lead to 3-0 with a strike from Megan Rowlett at 61:42. Heather Jennato (Hookset, N.H.) and Cassidy Bailey (Monson, Mass.) each laid shots on frame in the final minutes of the half, but could not edge into the Engineers lead.
Springfield hosts Babson College on Wednesday at 7pm.
