Springfield, Mass. - April 16, 2019 - The Springfield College women's tennis team eased their past over Emerson, 8-1, on Tuesday at Appleton Courts in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash.
The win improves Springfield's record to 10-4, 3-3 in conference play, while the loss drops the Lions to 9-8, 1-5.
Springfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a strong team effort in doubles action. The Pride's No. 3 team of Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) cruised to an 8-0 victory, while the top two doubles teams in Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.), and Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) each registered 8-4 victories.
In singles play, Freadman dominated her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2, before Etter followed with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph of her own at No. 3 to clinch the victory. Parrish added a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the top singles spot, while Malz added a 7-6(1), 6-2 win at No. 4. Ahlmeyer recorded the Pride's final win of the day at the No. 5 spot thanks to a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Springfield will play again on Saturday when it travels to face MIT for a 2 pm contest.
