Women's Tennis Competes in NEWITT's

South Hadley, Mass. - October 13, 2019 - The Springfield College women's tennis team competed in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) over the weekend against some of the top competition in the region. 

In the best-of-three format tournament, Springfield had three different pairs compete on Friday.  In the "B" draw, Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) went up against Caitlin Goldberg and Sasha Gaeth from Wesleyan.  In doubles, Wesleyan prevailed by an 8-1 score, while Malz dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Goldberg and Freadman put together a gritty performance in falling 3-6, 6-0 (14-12) to Gaeth.  In the consolation quarterfinals, the Nichosl team of Amarie Settiwongse and Isabelle Leonardi prevailed, 2-1.  Afer an 8-7 (7-0) win in doubles, Sweetiwongse pulled out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Freadman, while Malz produced a 6-3, 6-4 win in singles. 

In the "C" flight, Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) and Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) earned a victory over Mount Holyoke's Hannah Middleton and Shweta Kiran Cavale by a 2-1 decision.  Springfield cruised to an 8-3 doubles win and Fulgieri clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.  Ahlmeyer nearly completed the sweep before falling 2-6,6-4 (12-10).

Springfield started of the "D" draw with a strong performance by Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) and Heidi Schuman (Averill Park, N.Y.), which resulted in a 3-0 win against Western New England's Rachel Bauer and Jessica Cote.  The duo eased their way to an 8-0 doubles win and Piazza won 6-2, 6-3 in singles and Schuman prevailed 6-4, 2-6 (10-5).  Going up against Gordon, Springfield, which was the top seed in the draw, was edged by Gordon's Anna Mullane and Meli Markarian.  Gordon took an 8-4 win at doubles, and after Schuman cruised 6-3, 6-4, Mullane held on for a 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 victory.
