Worcester, Mass. - April 3, 2021 - The Springfield College women's tennis team opened up the 2021 campaign in promising fashion with an 8-1 triumph over host Clark University on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Competing in a match for the first time since October 6, 2019, a span of 585 days, the Pride won all six singles bouts to highlight the conference victory.
The No. 1 doubles team of Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Marian Bulkley (Durham, N.H.) were first off the courts with an 8-4 win, while Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) and Gabriella Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) prevailed by an 8-6 decision at No. 2.
In singles play, Bulkley made quick work of her opponent at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, followed by Piazza's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Malz cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory at the top spot and Heaney-Secord added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Heidi Schuman (Nassau, N.Y.) battled her way to a 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 at No. 5, and Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) sealed the victory with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win at No. 6.
Next up for Springfield will be a home contest on Appleton Courts against Wheaton College on April 11 which will begin at 11 am.
