Women's Volleyball Sweeps Union

Schenectady, N.Y. - September 11, 2019 -  The Springfield College women's volleyball team cruised past Union in straight sets in non-conference action on Wednesday night in the Viniar Athletic Center.  The Pride won by the scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.

The win lifts Springfield's record to 6-1 on the season.

Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.), who has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Athlete of the Week twice already this season, posted 11 kills at a .588 clip to go along with three blocks.  Briana Tovar (Tucson, Ariz.) registered a career-best seven aces, and Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) turned in 14 digs.  Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) delivered 31 assists and 12 digs in helping the Pride own a .287 team hitting percentage in the win.

The first set featured a dominant showing by Bancroft as the junior produced kills on all seven of her swings.  With the Pride leading 12-11 midway through the frame, Tovar took over from the end line and keyed an incredible 10-0 burst as she ripped off four aces to give the Pride a comfortable 22-11 lead.  The Pride would total 13 kills at a .322 clip to coast to the 25-19 win.

Springfield again used an early spurt to break open the second, as a 5-4 lead quickly turned into a 10-4 advantage following a five-point surge that was capped off by a block from Demi Spanos (West Harrison, N.Y.) and Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.).   The hosts would pull as close as 14-11, only to have Springfield score four-straight points, getting another Tovar ace to make it 18-11.  The Pride would take the 25-18 win following Union's eighth attack error of the frame as Springfield limited the hosts to a .000 attack percentage.

A kill from Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.) fueled a three-point run for the Pride as it earned a 13-8 cushion in the fifth, before another ace from Tovar would give the Pride match point at 24-18.  Two points later, Spanos converted her eighth kill of the night to complete the non-conference sweep.

Springfield will next compete at the nation's fifth-ranked team, Johnson & Wales, on Friday at 7 pm as the kickoff to the JWU Invitational.
