Springfield, Mass.- September 24, 2019—The Springfield College women's volleyball team secured a three-set victory over Clark University on Tuesday night in Blake Arena. The Pride won by the scores of 25-22,25-20, and 25-15.
With the win, Springfield captures its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season. The Pride's overall record improves to 10-4 while the Cougars drop to 4-10 and 0-3 in conference play.
Collectively, Springfield totaled 41 kills on .235 hitting percentage. The Pride had a balanced attack offensively having four players with seven or more kills. Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.) and Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.) each finished with nine kills. Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Bradley (Fairfax, Va.) contributed eight and seven kills, respectively. Sara Labadorf (Huntsville, N.C.) facilitated the offense with 34 assists and four kills of her own.
In the first set, Springfield would take their lead up to 21-16 after back-to-back kills from Bradley and Labadorf. An attack error and two aces would help Clark slim the margin, but kills from Walsh, Tanner, and Demi Spanos (West Harrison, N.Y.) would keep the Cougars at bay in the first set victory.
During the second set, the Pride would benefit from two scoring runs. Early in the set, the Pride capitalized on Clark miscues to extend their lead to 8-4. Clark would storm back to cut Springfield's lead to just one at 13-12. The Pride would respond and rattle off a 9-2 run to increase their lead 22-14, highlighted by the serving of Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and kills from Walsh and Tanner. The Pride would close out the set with a 25-22 victory.
The Springfield offense came alive with 18 kills while hitting .375 in the final set. Springfield's lead got up to nine after Walsh blocked the Clark attack to make the lead 21-12. The Pride would round out the game with strong serve receive getting back-to-back kills from Bradley and Bancroft that would push the margin to 10 and solidify the victory for the Pride.
Springfield will travel to Maine for a tri-match with Colby College and Bates College on Saturday, September 28 at 1pm and 4 pm.
