Women's Volleyball Picks Up Two Wins In Return To Blake Arena

Springfield, Mass. - September 3, 2021 - In their first competition since November 2, 2019, the Springfield College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories over Westfield State and Brandeis in the Springfield College Invitational on Friday in Blake Arena.

The Pride opened the day with a 25-7, 25-13, 25-15 victory over Brandeis as it hit .493 as a team before topping Brandeis by the scores of 25-10, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23. 

Springfield is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Endicott at 10:30 am and Skidmore at 3:30 pm on a day when the campus community celebrates 50 years of women's volleyball on Alden Street as well as Coach Joel Dearing Day.

Springfield 3, Westfield State 0

Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) was tremendous in her return to the court as she delivered 13 kills on 18 errorless attempts for a .722 hitting percentage, while controlling the net with seven total blocks, including three solo stuffs.  Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) and Taylor Harris (Canton, Mass.) each produced six kills, Mac Fornili (Fort Belvoir, Va.) totaled a match-high seven digs, and Hailey Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) was credited with five aces.  Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) paced Springfield's offense with 29 assists while also chipping in six digs, and three kills. 

In the opening frame, Brancroft totaled four kills and four blocks, and Deguire produced three aces as part of an early service run that allowed the Pride to storm out to a 9-1 advantage. Fornilli would later deliver the fifth ace of the set for Springfield as it coasted to a 25-7 win while hitting .565 as a squad.

Bancroft again shouldered the offensive load in the second, recording five kills, while both Deguire and Briana Tovar (Tucson, Ariz.) turned in a pair of aces each.  Springfield snagged a 9-3 advantage when Kylie Wixted (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) elevated for a stuff block in the middle, and Bancroft would later string together three-consecutive kills to give the Pride a 16-7 advantage. Springfield would go on to score the final five points of the set in the 25-13 triumph.

The third set featured eight ties as the teams traded points in the early going. However, Springfield broke open the nine-all tie with a 12-4 surge as it gained a 21-13 lead.  The Pride's offense hit at a .538 clip in the frame as seven student-athletes had at least one kill. Bancroft put the exclamation on the match with her 13th kill of the afternoon to complete the 25-15 win. 

 

Springfield 3, Brandeis 1

Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) continued her torrid start to her fifth season at Springfield as she produced 16 kills, hitting .536, while racking up seven blocks. Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) stuffed her stat line with a 16 digs to go along with 11 kills, while Kylie Wixted (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) chipped in seven kills.  Hailey Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) registered a team-best 16 digs and five aces, and Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) was credited with 35 assists. 

In the opening frame, Springfield benefitted from the Judges hitting -.267 as they committed 12 attack errors.  Out of a Brandeis timeout Taylor Harris (Canton, Mass.) ripped a kill to give the Pride a 16-7 lead and Billet and Wixted would combine for a block in the 25-10 victory, a frame that featured four kills and three blocks by Bancroft.

Deguire had another impressive service run midway through the second, registering four aces in a five-point stretch to help the hosts lead balloon to 18-9.  The Pride would earn set point at 24-13 on an ace by Abigail Wright (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), but Brandeis would find some momentum, scoring five-straight points before Bancroft delivered a stuff block at 25-18. 

Brandeis would later reeled off a 10-4 run in the early portion of the third to force Springfield into a timeout trailing 12-8.  The visitors, who hit .393 in the set, would lead by as many as seven points en route to the 25-19 win.

After Springfield scored the first point of the fourth, Brandeis had control of the set , leading throughout and building a 22-16 cushion.  However, a sideout kill from Wixted kickstarted an incredible run by the Pride as the hosts rattled off eight-straight points to earn match point at 24-22.  The Judges were able to make it 24-23 on a sideout kill, but Bancroft would not be denied as she terminated her seventh kill of the set to compete the four-game sweep.
