Women's Volleyball Prevails In Four Sets At Wellesley
Wellesley, Mass. - September 18, 2021 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team pulled out a four-set win at Wellesley in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won by the set scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-27, 26-24.
Receiving votes in the AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, Springfield improved to 9-0 with the win, including 2-0 in conference play.
The Pride hit .298 in the win as Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) totaled 35 assists and 14 digs and directed a Springfield offense that had four student-athletes with at least 10 kills. Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.) led the way with 15 kills, while Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) produced 12 kills and three blocks while hitting .407 in the middle. Fellow middle Kylie Wixted (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) turned in 10 kills at a .533 clip to go along with five blocks, and Natalie Billet (Commmack, N.Y.) chipped in 10 kills and 10 digs. The Pride limited Wellesley to a .081 hitting percentage on the day.
Nicole Doerges had 25 kills at a .396 clip in the setback for Wellesley, as Izzy Seebold totaled 35 helpers running the offense. Claire Bialek totaled a match-best 16 digs and TylerBell Smith registered six aces.
Leading 10-9 in the first, Springfield rattled off three -straight points, as an ace from Briana Tovar (Tucson, Ariz.) gave the Pride a four-point cushion. The Pride would push its lead to 20-14 on a Bancroft kills as the Blue called a timeout, before Bancroft would later put away her third kill of the afternoon for the 25-17 win.
The Pride jumped out to an 11-5 advantage when Wixted buried a kill in the middle, but the hosts would battle back to within 18-15 as Springfield called for a timeout. Out of the break, Wixted converted for a kill to kickstart a 4-1 surge that put the Pride in control as it pulled away for a 25-18 win. Wixted had five of her team's 12 kills in the set as the visitors held Wellesley to a -.029 hitting percentage in the set.
Springfield owned a 22-18 lead in the third, only to have Wellesley score six-straight points to earn set point at 24-22. Consecutive kills from Tanner would even things up, but Wellesley would deliver the 27-25 win behidn the play of Doerges, who had 10 kills in the set. ba
It was Wellesley that held the late lead in the fourth, as the hosts owned a 24-21 edge and was poised to force a fifth set. However, following a service error by Blue, Bancroft delivered a kill in transition and then teammed with Mac Fornili (Fort Belvoir, Va.) for a block to tie things up at 24. A Wellesley attack error and match-sealing kill from Bancroft completed the win for the Pride as they rallied in the fourth set, a frame in which Tanner was outstanding with eight of Springfield's 17 kills.
On Tuesday, Springfield returns to Blake Arena to take on Babson at 7 pm.
