Clark Clips Women's Volleyball In Four Sets
Springfield, Mass. - October 5, 2021 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team was topped in four sets by Clark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening in Blake Arena. The Cougars won by the scores of 26-24, 26-24, 17-25, 25-23.
Springfield, which was once again receiving votes in the AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, slipped to 11-4, 3-4 in conference play. Clark is now 10-6, 3-3.
The Pride had 17 more kills than Clark in the setback, as Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) turned in a 21-kill, 14-dig effort to pace the hosts. Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) tallied 14 kills and four blocks in the middle and Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) handed out 56 assists in helping the Pride to a .272 hitting percentage. First-year Hailey Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) registered a career-best 30 digs on the night and Abigail Wright (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had four of the Pride's eight aces.
Claudia Rivera had a team-best 18 kills for Clark and Marimo Oka notched 18 digs and three aces.
After falling behind 19-15 in the first, Springfield came out of a timeout to go on an 8-3 push, capped off by a block from Labadorf and Kylie Wixted (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) as the Cougars burned their final timeout of the set. The Pride would earn set point at 24-23 on Billet's fifth kill of the set, but a kill from Sofia Scherrer del Llano and back-to-back hitting errors allowed Clark to take the 26-24 win.
Springfield bounced back and seized a 13-7 lead in the second as Bancroft put a ball away and maintained a 23-21 cushion on another kill from Billet. However, Oka put some pressure on from the end line, as a 3-0 burst allowed Clark to earn set point following an ace. Billet would side out to even things up, but Sophia Tornia and Scherrer del Llano took big swings to complete the 26-24 win. Springfield totaled 19 kills in the set, including six from Bancroft.
The Pride broke open a 3-3 third set with a 10-3 burst as Springfield's offense found its stride. The hosts would lead by as many as nine points in the set, and Billet's six kills keyed the offense that hit .480 in the frame as Springfield cruised to a 25-17 win.
Clark stormed out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth, and despite trailing 23-17, Springfield battled its way back with a 6-0 run thanks to the tremendous serving of Wright. Knotted up at 23-all, Clark would benefit from consecutive Springfield attack errors to conclude the four-set win.
On Thursday, Springfield will travel to take on Gordon in non-conference play set for 7 pm.
