Women's Cross Country Claims Second at Early Bird Invitational
Keene, N.H. - September 4, 2021 - The Springfield College women's cross country team turned in a runner-up finish at the Early Bird Invitational in Keene, N.H. on Saturday.
Springfield last raced 655 days ago in the 2019 NCAA Division III Regional Championships on November 19, 2019. Springfield tallied 50 points at the event, while Smith claimed the top spot with 38 points. Assumption finished third followed by Westfield and Keene State.
In her first cross country action of her career, Kathryn Bonanno (Ellington, Conn.) earn the Pride's top finish with a time of 11:52, which placed the sophomore fourth overall in the event, while Heather Fontaine (Brimfield, Mass.) beat her previous course-best mark 12:02.60 from 2019 with a time of 11:57.90. Marissa Paolangeli (Tolland, Conn.) and Brenna LaChapelle (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished 11th and 12th overall in the race and clocked in times of 12:04.50 and 12:04.90, respectively. Rounding out the top five finishers for the Pride was Sophie Curcio (New Caanan, Conn.), who crossed the finish line at 12:06.10 for Springfield.
In her first appearance of her Springfield career, Shae Gallagher (Middleboro, Mass.) contributed a 12:29.40 finish on the day.
Springfield will race again on September 18 in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
