No. 1 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Penn State Behrend In NCAA Division III Championship First Round
Springfield, Mass. - April 15, 2022 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team returned to postseason play with a three-game sweep of Penn State Behrend on Friday afternoon in Blake Arena in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The Pride won by the scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-9.
The top-ranked team in the latest AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll and top seed in the national tournament, Springfield is now 27-1. Penn State Behrend's historic season came to a close with a 22-8 record as they made their first-ever appearance in the 16-team tournament. For Springfield, this marks their ninth trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament and first since 2019.
The Pride totaled 41 kills at a .614 clip in the match as Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) handed out 30 assists. Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) recorded 12 kills on 14 errorless attempts and added eight digs, four aces, and three blocks while Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) tallied 11 kills, four aces, and five digs.
For PSB, Cody Schnur had six kills and Diego Ortiz was credited with 11 assists as the visitors were held at a .000 hitting percentage in the setback.
The hosts jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the match after an ace by Anderson and Penn State called for its first timeout at 9-2 after their third attack error of the early going. The visitors would pull within 13-8 on a Springfield attack error, only to have Springfield respond with a 6-2 burst to force PSB into a timeout after Anderson converted out of the back row. Springfield would complete the 25-19 victory after Nate Reynolds (Baltimore, Md.) delivered two kills out of the middle.
Brandow hammered back-to-back overpass kills to give Springfield an early 7-0 cushion in the second before he later ripped a kill out of the backrow at 15-3 as the Lions called for their second time of the frame. An ace from Brandow made it 24-8 and the Lions seventh attack error of the set resulted in a 25-8 win. The Pride hit .667 in the stanza, compared to -.315 for PSB, with Brandow terminating five kills.
After dropping the opening point of the third, Springfield rattled off a 13-2 surge, with Anderson pouring on the pressure from the end line with a pair of aces. Springfield would notch 12 kills on 16 errorless swings in the set and coasted to a 25-9 third-set triumph.
